The DNS records point to the address that the internet uses to reach the server. Ferry finds it.
--public-ip. The address that you give. Ferry asks nobody.

IPv6
--public-ip is the only way to get AAAA records. Ferry does not guess an IPv6 address. The IPv6 address that a machine uses to connect to other machines is frequently temporary.
A server behind NAT has a private address on its network interface. Then Ferry asks these services, in this sequence:
