GuidesConnect a domain
The DNS record
One record with the name * sends each name under the domain to your server.
The record * answers for each name under the domain.
1 / 2
Add the records that Ferry shows at your DNS provider.
| Type | Name | Value | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
A | * | The public IP address of the server | Necessary: each service |
A | @ | The same | Optional: only to serve the domain itself |
What the names mean
*is a wildcard. One wildcard DNS record answers for each name under the domain. Thus a new service needs no new record.@is the domain itself. You need it only to serve something atexample.com, as a custom domain of one service.
The names are relative to the domain. Example: you connect apps.example.com, and your DNS zone is example.com. Then name the records *.apps and apps in that zone. Ferry shows the two forms.
If the server knows its own IPv6 address (--public-ip), Ferry also shows AAAA records. They are optional next to the A records. See The public address of the server.
