Error messages
A deploy that cannot resolve a reference fails. The message gives the name of the variable.

invalid reference '${{…}}': expected ${{kind.name.property}} | The reference has fewer or more than three parts. |
unknown reference kind 'bucket' (use datastore or service) | The kind is not datastore, db, database, service or svc. |
unknown datastore property 'nope' / unknown service property 'nope' | The property does not exist for that kind. Note: hostport is a property of a service only. |
unterminated reference in '…' | A ${{ has no }} after it. |
Errors in the target

service 'x' has no known port (deploy it first) | The service has no live deploy and no port in its settings. |
service 'x' has no public URL | You used url on a service that is not a web service or a static site. |
datastore 'x' has no external port yet | You used externalConnectionString before the datastore has a host port. |
datastore 'x' has no database name | You used database on a Redis datastore. |
